The Deadwood Historic District is a preserved gold mining town, in the Black Hills region of western South Dakota. In 1875, miners rushed to the area to mine gold. The town became famous for the interesting people that passed through and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Visit the quaint town of Deadwood to see some of the original buildings and to learn about its rich history.
One of the more famous duels, was between Wild Bill Hickok and Crooked Nose Jack McCall, at the surviving No. 10 Saloon. Wild Bill was killed during the 1876 scuffle. Be sure to visit the Saloon and Mount Moriah Cemetery, otherwise known as "Boot Hill", where Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok are buried. Stay close to this wonderful historical town as a guest of Best Western hotels.
