Explore the Campus of Black Hills State University in Western SD

college graduates

Head for the Black Hills and visit the BHSU campus.

Head for the Badlands in western South Dakota and check out Black Hills State University.

While the mega popular area attractions like Mount Rushmore and Badlands National Park are premier destinations, a visit to the campus of BHSU will yield a unique and fun perspective into the area.

It's a great idea if you're checking out colleges with your high school senior in preparation for that next big step, or if you're visiting Spearfish and seek activities for the whole family.

Founded in 1883, Black Hills State University is a public institution originally known as the Dakota Territory Spearfish Normal School.

The BHSU campus sprawls across nearly 123 acres of scenic and pristine SD Badlands at the northern foothills of the Black Hills National Forest

Visit Spearfish from nearby Sturgis, and enjoy a campus tour – BHSU features the Lyle Hare Stadium and the Ida Henton Park. You'll also take a peek at the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center and the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union

You'll want to get out and explore the area around BHSU. Head for Rapid City, found just to the east, and check out the Black Hills Caverns. Another top area attraction is the Journey Museum and Gardens – a fun afternoon activity near Spearfish and Rapid City. If you're planning on flying into the area, you'll most likely land at the Rapid City Regional Airport.

If you find yourself visiting the Black Hills in early August, be sure to check out the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally – one of the biggest festivals Sturgis hosts, and one of the largest motorcycle rallies in the US.

Many visitors into the Black Hills and the Spearfish area enjoy fequent trips to Deadwood – be sure to join in on the fun and plan a day trip. You'll want to check out the Adams Museum, a tribute to former Deadwood mayor W.E. Adams, or visit the Broken Boot Gold Mine. Before you leave, spend a little time exploring the Deadwood Historic District

Rapid City is the home to two other schools – the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and the Oglala Lakota College

In the world of college sports, the BHSU Yellow Jackets are a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The BHSU Yellow Jackets football team plays at the Lyle Hare Stadium.
