Mount Rushmore to Corn Palace

Visiting the Historic Sites of South Dakota

History buff? Museum hopper? Fan of the Old West? South Dakota has your answer. This staple of the Midwest encompasses an intriguing history, complete with roots in western heritage, American legacy, and Native American history. No matter where you find yourself in South Dakota, you’re sure to have a full itinerary.

Of course your first stop in the Mount Rushmore State is, you guessed it, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Take your time as you visit this iconic tribute to America’s founding fathers, and make sure you take as many pictures as you can during your time in Keystone.

Not far from Mount Rushmore rests the Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills National Forrest in the Badlands region of South Dakota. This impressive memorial acts as a tribute to the Native American heritage of the Midwest, and serves as yet another camera-friendly attraction in the Mount Rushmore State.

For South Dakota-specific attractions, check out stopping points like the Black Hills Mining Museum near Deadwood, and the South Dakota Hall of Fame in Chamberlain. Of course, no trip through South Dakota is complete without a visit to the legendary Corn Palace found in Mitchell, or a look at the Black Hills Central Railroad 1880 Train set in Hill City.

For every historic site in the Mount Rushmore state there is a nearby Best Western hotel. Spend your days exploring museums, cultural centers, and national parks – like the Badlands National Park and Wind Cave National Park – and your nights with a Best Western hotel in South Dakota.
