Black Hills Mining Museum

The Black Hills Mining Museum is located in Lead, near Deadwood in the Badlands region of South Dakota. The museum preserves the area's rich gold mining history. Browse the museum's exhibits and enjoy the 45 minute informative tour in the recreated Homestake Gold Mine exhibit, for a personal explanation of gold mining. More than 140 miners and former employees, helped to create this realistic mine exhibit.

During the gold rush, the Homestake mine was the world's largest gold mine, reaching 8,000 feet below the surface. Be sure to pan for gold in the museum's panning display, to complete your visit. Stay close to the museum, in a comfortable Best Western guest room and enjoy excellent guest services.

Deadwood Historic District

The Deadwood Historic District is a preserved gold mining town, in the Black Hills region of western South Dakota. In 1875, miners rushed to the area to mine gold. The town became famous for the interesting people that passed through and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Visit the quaint town of Deadwood to see some of the original buildings and to learn about its rich history.

One of the more famous duels, was between Wild Bill Hickok and Crooked Nose Jack McCall, at the surviving No. 10 Saloon. Wild Bill was killed during the 1876 scuffle. Be sure to visit the Saloon and Mount Moriah Cemetery, otherwise known as "Boot Hill", where Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok are buried.
