Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a 60-foot-high sculpture of former United States presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, in a granite face of Mount Rushmore mountain. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum started the memorial construction in 1927 and the four faces were completed by 1939. Initial designs included to have each president depicted from head to waist, but lack of funding in 1941, caused the construction plans to end.
The memorial is located near Keystone in the Rapid City and Badlands region of South Dakota. Managed by the National Park Service since 1933, the memorial is South Dakota's top tourist attraction. In 1966, the memorial was added to the list of National Register of Historic Places.
