Visiting Rapid City, the Badlands, & Mt. Rushmore

South Dakota’s landscape is wide-ranging, and out in the Badlands region – essentially everything from Wall westward – you’ll find an impressive batch of things to see and do. During the fall and into winter, South Dakota’s Badland’s region will also yield a wealth of premier events, festivals, concerts and more, all sure to make your stay unforgettable.

A city like Spearfish should most certainly be on your must-visit list when traveling through South Dakota this fall. You’ll want to explore Spearfish Canyon, which is absolutely stunning during the fall, and the High Plains Western Heritage Center will yield unique and important insights into the history of the Badlands.

Your late-2016 visit to Spearfish should include some holiday flair. Visit the Spearfish Park Pavilion From November 30th to December 3rd for the annual Zonta Festival of Trees. Hosted by the Zonta Club of Spearfish, this fundraiser benefits the local community with neatly decorated Christmas trees on display for all to see, and it culminates with Breakfast with Santa on the 3rd.

Make sure you allocate some time to explore the city of Deadwood. Home to premier attractions like the Broken Boot Gold Mine, and the Deadwood Historic District – an ideal place for a fall stroll – Deadwood is sure to be a hit with the whole group. This fall and into early 2017, Deadwood will be the site of some truly excellent events.

On November 13th be sure to check out a live performance from Little River Band at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Casino. They’ll take to the stage starting a 7 p.m. On December 9th you can see the iconic pop-rock star Gary Puckett live on the same Deadwood Mountain Grand Casino stage starting at 8 p.m. The drive in from nearby Sturgis will be quick and scenic.

Any visit to the Badlands of South Dakota should include an extended stay in Rapid City. Full of charms and welcoming locals, Rapid City will yield fun-filled days for all members of your group. Don’t miss a tour of the Black Hills Caverns or the Journey Museum & Gardens.

Early 2017 in Rapid City will also mean you can check out one of the state’s premier events – the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo. Held from January 27th to February 5th at the Central States Fairgrounds, the BHSS will feature a variety of your favorite rodeo events, along with the CINCH Trade Show, and the newly added Broncs for Breakfast bronc-riding competition.
