Visiting Rapid City, the Badlands, & Mt. Rushmore
Summertime sees the western side of South Dakota at its best. Sunny days serve as an invitation to experience the expansive and euphoric wilderness of Black Hills National Forest, Badlands National Park, and the iconic Mount Rushmore. And this season, a variety of fun festivals and events help you get a sense of the personality of communities from Sturgis to Rapid City to Hot Springs.
Custer and Hill City are enveloped by Black Hills National Forest, and visitors to both communities enjoy convenient access to an abundance of opportunities for adventure. Hike the 3.2-mile Crow Peak and reap rewarding views of Spearfish Mountain and Bear Butte, have a picnic at the Spring Creek Picnic Area, or launch a boat into the Deerfield Reservoir – the options are endless.
Celebrate the culture native to the Rapid City area at the 4th Annual Gathering of People, Wind, and Water on July 18th. Rapid City’s Main Street Square is transformed into a Native American art market showcasing the works of nearly 50 Great Plains Native Artists. Browse handmade creations while enjoying live music all day long. The celebration culminates in a special concert starting at 6 p.m.
Many would argue South Dakota is best seen on two wheels, whether propelled by pedals or the power of 79 horses. For those partial to pedals, there’s the 2016 Black Hills Fat Tire Festival, June 19th through 21st in Rapid City. In addition to a series of bicycle races, the festival features beer, vendors, food, and even a Family Fun Ride for visitors with young kids in tow.
Harleys and other hogs head to Sturgis, August 8th to 14th, for the 2016 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Overtaking Main Street and the downtown area, the week is jam-packed with rider-friendly fun, from bike shows, breakfasts, and scenic group rides, to concerts by some of the biggest names in rock ‘n’ roll. Knuckleheads and Ironheads alike will pack in to see performances by Alice Cooper, Styx, Lynyrd Sknyrd, and more.
