Visiting South Dakota

As the summer sun subsides and changing leaves paint South Dakota’s expansive landscape in a vibrant array of fall colors, communities from Vermillion to Pierre to Aberdeen welcome visitors with a wealth of ways to have fun outdoors. Special events, festivals, and family-friendly activities – the Mount Rushmore State has it all this season.

Sioux Falls serves as the state’s urban anchor, and visitors won’t have trouble finding plenty to see and do this season. Not only are attractions like the Great Plains Zoo and the Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science primed for a visit, events like the 2015 Parade of Homes and the 2015 Sidewalk Arts Festival, both held the weekend of September 12th, help visitors get a sense of local life.

Sioux Falls residents and visitors get into the Halloween spirit a little early at the Great Plains Zoo, October 23rd through 25th, when the 2015 ZooBoo events bring three days of Halloween rides, jack-o-lanterns, tasty treats to enjoy along with the zoo’s abundance of exotic animals.

That same weekend, Sioux City celebrates the official start of fall. The 2015 Autumn Festival fills the Sioux Falls Convention Center with a unique collection of arts and crafts, home decor, homemade gifts, and more. The festivities will also feature live entertainment and local food offerings. It all starts at 11 a.m. each day, October 23rd through 25th.

A month later, the capital city of Pierre gears up for the holidays. After the 2015 Christmas at the Capitol Grand Lighting Ceremony on November 24th, more 100 decorated trees and other decorations dazzle visitors to the South Dakota State Capitol, every day from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. through December 26th.

To the west, families won’t want to miss a chance to ride on the 1880 Train Holiday Express. Departing from Hill City, the train travels along the historic Black Hills Central Railroad to the “North Pole,” where kids get gifts and the chance to meet Santa Claus himself.

Join Custer residents as they celebrate the upcoming holiday with the 2015 Custer Christmas Parade & Holiday Gift Craft Fair. Taking over downtown Custer on December 5th at 5:30 p.m., the event also sees area merchants opening up for special deals of their own to expand upon the selection at the craft fair.
