Visiting Central & Eastern South Dakota
The Mount Rushmore State's eastern reaches come alive in the springtime, welcoming visitors with warmer weather and a wealth of ways to have fun – indoors and out. Adventures await throughout the state's vast countryside and communities from Murdo to Aberdeen to Sioux Falls are eager to celebrate the season through a variety of festivals, special events, and family-friendly fun.
Sioux Falls visitors in search of a little rodeo action look to the 2016 First Premier Bank PBR. Held April 2nd and 3rd at the Denn Sanford Premier Center, it sees the experts of the Professional Bull Riders tour in action as part of one of the tour's biggest events of the season.
Visit Watertown, in northeastern South Dakota, and bask in beautiful spring weather at the 100-plus-year-old Bramble Park Zoo. The zoo hosts Roots and Shoots 2016 Free Day on April 2nd, inviting families to learn about Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots program through a variety of stations inside the Discovery Center. Then, on June 24th, the 2016 Sunset Zoofari invites adults 21 and older to celebrate cultures around the world with a variety of food and drinks.
In Chamberlain, visitors can find a sense of the rich history and culture dating back to long before the land was known as South Dakota. The 2016 Chamberlain High School POW WOW is May 7th, bringing a range of traditional dancing, food, and more to the Chamberlain Community Service building on May 7th.
The Scandinavian roots run deep in Vermillion, in the far southeast corner of South Dakota, and the Dalesburg Heritage Group hosts the 2016 Midsommar Festival on June 24th, paying tribute to the area's Scandinavian-American culture. Held 15 miles north of Vermillion at the Dalesburg Lutheran Church, Midsommar features live music, authentic cooking, craft stands, the raising of the midsummer pole, and all sorts of other fun.
Twenty-five miles west of Vermillion on the banks of the Missouri River, Yankton is the gateway to Lewis and Clark Lake. As spring turns to summer, the lake becomes an even more popular destination for boating, fishing, jet skiing, swimming, and more. The marina has over 400 boat slips and there are also plenty of beaches for those who prefer simply relaxing in the sun.
